11th November: All sixth form students were invited to an inspiring assembly on remembrance set up by Mr Buckley and Miss Cruse. The assembly included poetry readings, historical figures and the Last Post performed by Ellie Bagshaw. Buckley’s inclusion of history made the assembly more interesting to the students as they learnt aspects of the past wars they weren’t aware of. For example, Giuseppe Lella who had an extraordinary story about life during Nazi occupation of Milan; and Colin Parry whose son died in an IRA bombing and then went on to help stop the war with the IRA. The poetry readings by Bella Hollamby, Loren Withey and Miss Cruse gave the students even more of an insight of different areas of war in a more artistic way.

After the two minutes silence, students walked to the garden outside the refectory were dozens of stick crosses were stuck in the ground. Everyone had a poppy on their seat when they arrived at the assembly, each with a message relating to Remembrance Day from a different student in sixth form. Examples include: “I will remember”, “Bravery & loyalty” and “Thank you for your service”. These poppies were then placed on top of the crosses. Mr Buckley’s created this demonstration of respect to show that although these poppies will go the messages will live on. A beautiful message to end the assembly with.
